S&P Downgrades Romania's Rating to 'Junk'

Standard & Poor's (S&P) has downgraded Romania's credit rating to 'BB+' from 'BBB-', placing it in the 'junk' category. This decision, announced on October 2, 2026, follows months of political instability and rising public debt. The downgrade could lead to higher borrowing costs for the country, potentially triggering a new wave of price increases and taxes. Romania's failure to form a new government had increased pressure on its investment-grade credit rating.
