Peru's Sierra Braces for Extreme Cold, Temperatures Could Drop to -19°C
The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) has issued an orange meteorological alert warning of extreme cold in Peru's sierra. Nighttime temperatures are expected to decrease from moderate to strong intensity between Saturday, August 1 and Monday, August 3. In the highest areas of the southern sierra, temperatures could reach as low as -19°C. The alert covers eight departments: Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Moquegua, Puno, and Tacna. Senamhi and Indeci have recommended preventive measures such as staying informed, using thermal and waterproof clothing, protecting vulnerable populations, and securing properties against strong winds.5 sourcesSee all sources
