Portugal Probes US Use of Lajes Base in Iran War

Portuguese prosecutors have opened an investigation into the legality of the government's authorization of US use of Lajes Air Base in the Azores during the Iran conflict. The probe follows a complaint by the opposition Left Bloc, which argued that allowing US transit through the base violated international law. Portugal authorized several US flights through Lajes after hostilities began, with Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel stating that the decision complied with international law and was granted after Washington said any operation would be defensive, necessary, and proportionate.
