Mount Merapi Erupts in Indonesia

Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active and dangerous volcanoes, has become active again in Indonesia. Lava flows have reached approximately 2 kilometers down the mountain's slope, with authorities warning residents and visitors not to approach the mountain. This volcano has a history of devastating eruptions, including one in 1006 that destroyed the Javanese-Indian kingdom of Mataram and another in 1673 that affected several cities and villages. Since the beginning of this century, eruptions of Merapi have taken between 370 and 1,000 lives.
