Arctic Shipping Boom Amid Middle East Conflict and Warming
Arctic shipping has seen a significant surge, with a record 133 voyages in September, up 46% from August and over four times the 2022 level. This increase is driven by the Iran war diverting ships from traditional routes and global warming making the Arctic route more navigable. Almost half of these voyages were by Russian-flagged ships, with Chinese carriers also using the route to avoid Middle East disruptions. The journey time can be significantly reduced, with one Chinese container ship taking 24 days to travel from China to the UK.10 sourcesSee all sources
