AI Experts Warn of Human Extinction Risk Within Decade

Leading AI researchers and experts, including those from Anthropic, have expressed concern that artificial intelligence could potentially wipe out humanity within the next ten years. The primary worry is the 'recursive self-improvement' phase, where AI systems could design and train the next generation of models with minimal human intervention, possibly escaping human control and causing catastrophic damage. The estimated probability of this happening ranges from 10% to over 10%, depending on the source.
