Europe's Energy Crisis: High Gas Prices Push Utilities Back to Coal

Europe's energy crisis continues as gas prices remain high, leading utilities to revert to using coal for power generation. This shift comes despite Europe's efforts to phase out coal and diversify its energy mix. The crisis, triggered by Europe's reliance on imported LNG and global geopolitical volatility, has seen gas prices surge to record levels, making coal cheaper for power generation. Experts predict this trend will continue for years. However, Europe's coal capacity is limited due to previous phase-down policies. Meanwhile, globally, coal remains the largest power source, driving economic development in emerging economies but contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
