China Proposes New Tech Export Bans Covering AI, Biotech, and Solar Power

China's Ministry of Commerce and Science and Technology announced a review of the catalog of prohibited or restricted export technologies, proposing to ban the export of 14 technologies and restrict another 26 in strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and solar energy. The proposal covers 23 AI technologies, twelve photovoltaic, and five biotechnologies, including those related to large language models, intelligent agents, computing capacity, and advanced solar cell manufacturing. The ministry justified the initiative due to the growing application of these technologies in sensitive areas and sought to prevent the risks of 'loss of control and inappropriate dissemination' of advanced knowledge.

New Laser Method Predicts Airplane Turbulence Over 30km Away

A study proposes a new detection method using laser technology to identify moderate atmospheric disturbances causing turbulence in airplanes over 30 kilometers away. The method, based on analyzing modifications of a light beam passing through unstable air regions, could provide around two minutes of warning at typical cruising speeds. However, the system has not yet been validated under commercial flight conditions.

Microplastics React with Water, Potentially Harming Cells

A new study published in Nature reveals that microplastics, when they come into contact with water, can generate highly reactive molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS can alter molecules present in living organisms, potentially leading to cell damage. The study suggests that this chemical reaction could help explain the biological damage associated with microplastics. The findings challenge the previously held belief that microplastics are inert and highlight the need for further research to understand the full extent of their potential harm.
