    AI Predicts Sun's Active Regions Hours Before Visible

    NASA's COFFIES team has developed an AI model that predicts the emergence of active regions on the Sun up to 12 hours before they appear. These regions, which can cause solar flares and coronal mass ejections, are currently tracked by space weather forecasters once they become visible as sunspots. The new AI model uses a sliding-window transformer architecture to analyze data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and predict active regions' approximate locations before they become visible. This could improve space weather forecasting and protect astronauts and technology from solar storms.

    Daniela Largo Dies After Earthquake Rescue

    Daniela Largo, rescued after 36 hours under the rubble of a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Pereira, Colombia, has died. The 32-year-old suffered serious health complications after being revived for 17 minutes following a cardiac arrest. She left a 12-year-old son. Her father reported that she had severe dehydration, high blood pressure, lung involvement, and damage to several organs. Rescue efforts lasted seven hours and involved dozens of firefighters and search dogs.

    PHV Confirmed in South African Sardine Mortality Event

    Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) genetic material in sardines linked to the recent mass mortality event along South Africa's West Coast. However, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) says scientists have not yet established that the virus is responsible for the deaths. PHV was detected in dead sardines and at lower levels in some apparently healthy fish. Researchers are now investigating whether environmental factors such as harmful algal blooms, low oxygen levels, and unusual oceanographic conditions may have triggered or worsened the deaths. The department stressed that PHV is associated with sardines and there is currently no evidence that it infects humans or other animals.

    FDA Upgrades Egg Recall to Highest Risk Level Due to Salmonella
