EU Urges Clear Indication for Recording on Smart Glasses
The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has expressed serious privacy concerns regarding smart glasses that can secretly record video and audio. The authority, led by Chairwoman Anu Talus, has warned that these devices, which resemble ordinary glasses but have cameras and microphones, should clearly indicate when users are filming or recording. This could be through flashing lights, warning signals, or notifications sent to nearby smartphones. The EDPB refers to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which requires informed consent and the right to object to personal data processing. The authority also raised concerns about potential future use of AI for facial and voice recognition, which could impact freedom in public spaces. Smart glasses, offered by various manufacturers in collaboration with tech companies like Meta and Google, can take photos, videos, and live streams. Some countries, like Norway, are considering bans in certain locations due to privacy concerns.7 sourcesSee all sources
