CPJ Removes Combatant Journalists from Database

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has removed 28 people from its database of journalists and media workers killed in the Israel-Gaza conflict after determining they had engaged in combat. The review began after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad published obituaries identifying some individuals on CPJ's list as their fighters. CPJ maintains that affiliation with a militant organization is not sufficient for exclusion if a person was working as a civilian journalist and not directly participating in hostilities.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Criticizes Supreme Court's Frequent Use of Emergency Docket

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson delivered a speech at the University of the District of Columbia's law school, criticizing the Supreme Court's frequent use of its emergency docket. She argued that the court's practice of stepping in before lower courts have finished their work is 'problematic' and could lead to mistrust in the judicial system. Jackson specifically mentioned several cases involving the Trump administration, where the court allowed controversial policies to proceed while challenges were ongoing in lower courts. She also expressed concern that the emergency docket could become an 'end run' around the standard review process, benefiting privileged litigants.

Trump Administration Challenges Court Ruling on Third-Country Deportations

The Trump administration has appealed to the Supreme Court to lift restrictions on deporting immigrants to third countries, after a federal appeals court ruled that migrants must be given notice and a chance to contest their destination. The case, D.V.D. v. Department of Homeland Security, centers around the administration's use of third-country deportations, which send migrants to nations other than their country of origin or citizenship. The appeals court's ruling, which went into effect on Wednesday, requires the Department of Homeland Security to provide migrants with meaningful notice and an opportunity to raise fears of persecution or torture before deporting them to third countries.
