Oil Field Discoveries at Lowest Level Since 1980

The number of new oil fields discovered worldwide has fallen to its lowest level since 1980, with only 19 large-scale fields found in 2025. This decline is attributed to major oil and gas companies shifting their efforts towards developing new energy sources such as renewable energy and hydrogen projects. Despite this shift, demand for hydrocarbons remains high, and the global diesel fuel shortage is expected to continue until 2027. The lack of proven reserves may exacerbate competition for resources in the coming years, potentially impacting prices and the industry.

Palm Oil Prices Expected to Remain High in 2026 Due to Weather Uncertainties and Energy Market Conditions

Crude palm oil prices are forecast to stay above $1,154 per ton and RM4,700 per ton for the rest of 2026, driven by El Niño-related dry weather in Malaysia and Indonesia, which could lead to decreased production. This is compounded by bullish energy market conditions, with diesel prices surging 147% since the beginning of the year. However, a potential decline in energy prices and a build-up of stock could pose downside risks.
