Ministry of Education Tightens Admission Rules for Olympic Privileges
The Ministry of Education and Science, led by Valery Falkov, announced plans to strengthen controls over university admissions, particularly regarding academic competition privileges. The number of such competitions will be reduced from 83 to 60, and only winners will be able to enter without exams, while prize-winners will receive 100 points on the relevant Unified State Exam. These changes aim to address situations where all budget places on a specialty are occupied by olympiad winners.3 sourcesSee all sources
Russian Scientists Develop Highly Efficient Infrared-Absorbing Material for Night-Vision Devices
Russian scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a germanium-based material that absorbs 96% of infrared radiation. This material, designed by specialists from three institutes, feeds a detector that converts it into an electrical signal within tens of microseconds. Cameras built with this material operate in the shortwave infrared range, enabling them to see through fog and smoke and perform in poor-visibility conditions. Unlike thermal imagers, these cameras capture reflected light, producing images closer to black-and-white photographs with shadows and contrast. The developers believe there are no fundamental technological limits, and the processes can be integrated into existing production chains without unique raw materials or exotic equipment. If moved from lab to factory, this technology could enhance military night vision, medical imaging, and industrial defect detection.2 sourcesSee all sources
