    Vietnamese Marriage Scams: Woman Sentenced for Defrauding Chinese Man of Millions

    Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo, a 43-year-old woman from Vietnam, was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison for orchestrating an elaborate fake marriage scam. She posed as a matchmaker, hired accomplices to act as a bride and her family, and defrauded a 38-year-old Chinese man of 2.45 billion Vietnamese dong (around $105,000 USD). The scam involved multiple meetings, demands for dowry and wedding expenses, and culminated in the victim being left stranded at a barbershop.
