Japan's Top Four Brewers Raided Over Suspected Beer Price Cartel

Japan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) raided the offices of Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Spirits, and Sapporo Breweries on Wednesday, suspecting them of forming an illegal cartel to manipulate shipment prices for beer and other products. The four companies, which control over 90% of the Japanese beer market, are accused of adjusting prices for beer, 'happoshu' (quasi-beer), and third-segment beer-like beverages over several years. The FTC believes this could significantly impact consumers, given the large market size. The investigation is ongoing, with potential criminal charges and substantial fines if the cartel is confirmed.
