    Record High for Basic Security Recipients in Old Age, Driven by Foreigners

    The number of recipients of basic security in old age in Germany has reached a new record high, with around 771,000 people receiving the benefit at the end of the first quarter of 2026. This represents a 36.7% increase from 2020. Notably, the number of foreign recipients has surged by 83%, reaching around 280,000, primarily due to immigration from Ukraine. The increase among German citizens was 19.5%. The net expenditure for this benefit has also risen from around 3.3 billion euros in 2020 to around 6.2 billion euros in 2025.

    Two Dead in Irkutsk Region Bear Attacks

    Two men have died in separate bear attacks in Irkutsk region over the past few days. On October 2, a 71-year-old man was attacked and killed by a bear near the mouth of the Ilim River in Ust-Ilimsky district. Two days later, a 55-year-old worker was fatally mauled by a bear that entered his residential hut at an enterprise in Kazachinsko-Lensky district. Authorities have urged residents to avoid going into the forest, hunting, and fishing due to the increased number of bear attacks.
