    Historic Feminists Clash with UN Women Official Over Trans Agenda

    More than 70 feminist organizations and historic figures like Ángeles Álvarez and Amelia Valcárcel denounced UN Women's regional director Bibiana Aído for distributing a report critical of UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem's stance on transgender issues and biological sex. The report, distributed on June 10, 2026, was seen as an attempt to discredit Alsalem and shift the framework of women's rights towards gender identity-centered approaches. Alsalem, who was elected in 2021, considers herself harassed by UN Women for not adopting pro-trans positions. The organizations argue that the report misrepresents Alsalem's visits to Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia and dilutes the distinction between sex and gender. They ask UN Secretary-General António Guterres to investigate the matter and ensure UN Women adheres to the CEDAW mandate.
