Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward Bans Short-Term Rentals in Residential Areas
Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, home to the highest number of short-term rentals (minpaku) in Japan, has decided to ban their operation in residential areas and near schools. This decision comes in response to a surge in complaints from local residents about noise, litter, and other inconveniences caused by tourists. The ban will affect more than half of the current facilities, with around 2,000 lodgings expected to close. The ward plans to enforce the new rules by summer 2027, following a public opinion gathering process.40 sourcesSee all sources
