Nicaragua: Ortega's Regime Proposes Constitutional Reforms to Dismantle Elections and Civic Space

Daniel Ortega's regime in Nicaragua is facing international condemnation for proposing constitutional reforms that seek to dismantle the right to participate in public affairs. Amnesty International and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have both denounced the initiative, which aims to extend the presidential term, permanently exclude opposition figures from elections, and further concentrate power. The reforms, if approved, would violate international human rights obligations and deepen authoritarian consolidation in the country. Nicaraguan opponents in exile have called on OAS member states to pressure Ortega's government to ensure free elections.
