Chilean Woman Found Alive Decades After Being Declared Disappeared During Pinochet Era

Bernarda Rosalba Vera Contardo, believed to be one of the victims of forced disappearance during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile, has been found alive and living in Argentina. The 80-year-old woman was declared missing in 1973 and had been presumed dead for decades. Her whereabouts were discovered by Chilevisión TV station last year. DNA tests have confirmed her identity with a probability of over 99.9999%. Bernarda Vera was an active political militant and part of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) and the Revolutionary Peasant Movement (MCR) when she went missing. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission had listed her as one of the 1,469 victims of forced disappearance in Chile. However, her fate was different, and she managed to escape to Argentina with the help of an MIR member. She later moved to Sweden, obtained citizenship, and returned to Argentina. The revelation has sparked questions about the funds received by her family as reparations for her presumed death.
