Romania's First Post-1989 Nighttime Street Lighting Restrictions in Iași

In Romania, the city of Iași is implementing nighttime street lighting restrictions for the first time since 1989 to save electricity amidst an energy crisis. This measure comes due to severe drought-induced low water levels in the Danube, which forced the shutdown of both reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. The city will reduce street lighting while keeping hospitals, underground crossings, central squares, and major pedestrian zones fully lit. Police patrols will increase to ensure safety, and the municipality estimates savings of around 10 megawatt-hours each night.
