Peruvian Court Annuls Ollanta Humala's Money Laundering Conviction

The Constitutional Court of Peru annulled the entire criminal process against former President Ollanta Humala for money laundering, eliminating his 15-year prison sentence. The ruling, adopted by five votes to two, declared null and void the investigations, subsequent judicial resolutions, and the sentence that convicted Humala. The TC ordered his immediate release from Barbadillo prison, where he had been detained for fifteen months. The majority of the magistrates concluded that the process violated the principles of legality and criminal typification, as the conduct described was not expressly contemplated as a crime when the facts occurred. Humala's lawyer expressed satisfaction with the ruling and confirmed that they would immediately manage his release.
