The Russian government has banned cryptocurrency mining in Moscow, the Moscow region, and several districts of the Kursk region bordering Ukraine. The restrictions will come into effect on August 15, 2026, and will last until the end of 2032. This decision was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The ban covers mining pools as well as direct mining and is due to energy capacity shortfalls, with 65 data centers already pulling 734 MW from the Moscow grid.
