Ghost Ancestors' DNA Found in Modern Humans

A new computational approach has identified human DNA inherited from unknown 'ghost' ancestors. This method, called TRACE, reconstructs ancestral recombination graphs to detect genetic traces of ancient crosses. It revealed two unknown ancestors: one that interbred with modern humans in Africa around 50,000 years ago, contributing around 1% of the modern human genome, and another that interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia, with some of its DNA later shared with modern humans. These findings paint a more complex picture of human evolution, with interconnected populations and repeated episodes of migration and admixture.
