Janitzio Cemetery Closed to Tourists During Day of the Dead Due to Landslide

The cemetery on Janitzio Island in Michoacan will remain closed to tourists during the Day of the Dead celebrations on November 1 and 2 due to a landslide that occurred on August 28. The measure responds to a recommendation from Civil Protection. The landslide damaged tombs, crosses, and part of the perimeter wall of the cemetery. While the restriction applies to tourists, island residents can enter the cemetery to perform their traditional vigil. A panoramic walkway with controlled access has been enabled for visitors to observe the ceremony and take photographs without entering the cemetery. Works are being carried out to stabilize the terrain, reinforce the perimeter wall, and construct a walkway and a viewpoint terrace.
