UN: Venezuela's Repressive Apparatus Remains Intact Despite Maduro's Arrest

A UN report finds that while there have been limited improvements in human rights in Venezuela since the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the country's repressive apparatus remains largely intact. Long-term detentions and forced disappearances have decreased, and hundreds of political prisoners have been released. However, numerous laws used to criminalize dissent remain in force, and security forces and intelligence services retain their structures and practices. Armed civilian groups, known as 'collectives,' continue to operate without intervention. The mission head, Sofía Macher, warns that without institutional reforms, any openings will be fragile and reversible.
