IBM and NASA have collaborated to develop an open-source AI model, the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, designed to analyze lunar data at scale. The model can identify hidden relationships between different types and resolutions of data, enabling scientists to study lunar ice, craters, and volcanic activity more efficiently. One of its main applications is detecting lunar ice in permanently shadowed regions, a crucial resource for future lunar bases and Mars missions. Additionally, the model can map craters and study lunar volcanic history. Alongside the model, a unified open-source lunar dataset has been created, integrating multimodal and multiresolution records from various missions.
