EU's Energy Independence Plan Stalls Despite Hundreds of Billions in Spending

The European Union's REPowerEU program, launched in 2022 to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, has failed to make significant progress despite allocating less than 20% of the €300 billion earmarked. Less than 55 billion has been spent, and most countries have not submitted applications. While Europe has reduced Russian oil and gas imports, it remains dependent on Russian energy, with gas reserves critically low entering winter. The total ban on Russian LNG imports set for 2027 may exacerbate the situation.
