Starting January 1, 2027, residents of Moldova will pay a 20% VAT on online purchases costing up to €150, along with a €12 (approximately 12 lei) fee per shipment. This new tax regime aims to raise around 120 million lei in revenue. The tax will only apply to shipments coming from outside the European Union, and customers will pay the taxes directly upon pickup and receipt of the goods. However, the current system may result in VAT being paid twice if a shipment passes through an EU country. There is also no provision for VAT refunds if the buyer returns the shipment.
