Recognizing Postpartum Psychosis: Symptoms and Urgent Care

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but severe psychiatric condition affecting approximately one to two out of every thousand new mothers. It occurs within the first two weeks after birth and is characterized by hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and confusion. Key behaviors to watch out for include severe insomnia, rapid speech, manic behavior, and unrealistic delusions. It's a medical emergency with a high risk of self-harm or harm to the baby, requiring immediate psychiatric care, often including hospitalization and antipsychotic medication. Early intervention leads to a good prognosis.
