First Woman Leads Panama Canal Amidst El Niño Challenges

Marine engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta has become the first woman to assume the position of administrator of the Panama Canal. She takes charge at a time when the canal faces significant challenges, including water sustainability issues due to the El Niño weather phenomenon and the need to diversify its services. The canal, which handles around 5% of global maritime trade, has already implemented traffic and draft restrictions due to drought. Espino de Marotta has prioritized the Rio Indio Lake project to ensure water supply for both the canal and the country's population. She also plans to expand the canal's offerings by building two ports and a gas pipeline. The canal's main users are the United States and China.
