Cross-Border Fraud Ring Busted: Scamming Women Through Fake Gambling Sites

A cross-border high-tech fraud ring, led by Chinese nationals, was recently busted by Vietnamese and Lao authorities. The gang posed as successful entrepreneurs on social media to scam Vietnamese women into depositing money on fake gambling websites, illegally occupying over 445 billion Vietnamese dong (approx. 1.146 million yuan). From March to June 2022, the syndicate recruited Vietnamese workers via social media, promising easy work and high pay, and brought them to Laos. The gang used excuses like 'IP anomaly' or 'algorithm error' to convince victims to let them operate and share profits, initially allowing small wins and withdrawals to build trust. Once victims deposited large amounts, the withdrawal function would be frozen, forcing them to transfer more money. On June 7, joint enforcement teams arrested 57 suspects in Bokeo province, Laos, with 45 Vietnamese suspects repatriated to Hai Phong.
