E-commerce giant AliExpress has been caught monitoring users through a unique method of audio fingerprinting. The company uses silent audio signals generated by code running on its webpages to track users without relying on traditional browser cookies. This method allows tracking even when cookies are deleted or blocked. The issue was discovered when a developer's Bluetooth headphones refused to transfer audio connection while AliExpress was open. Brave browser revealed that AliExpress was maintaining access to the computer's audio-processing system without producing audible sound. The scripts allegedly used the browser's Web Audio API to process signals at zero volume, creating a unique identifier for devices based on how they handle these signals.
