Dominican Republic's Zoo Houses Confiscated Wildlife

The Dominican Republic's only zoo is serving as a refuge for an increasing number of wild animals seized during government crackdowns on illegal ownership and smuggling. The National Zoological Park in Santo Domingo is caring for crocodiles, flamingos, tigers, and other animals confiscated from people accused of keeping them illegally. Authorities seized 188 animals last year, a significant increase from 30 in 2023. Flamingos are among the most rescued animals, often taken from the wild and sold to hotels or homeowners as garden features. The government is also launching public education campaigns to discourage people from keeping wild and exotic animals.
