Maharashtra to Take Action Against Taxi, Auto Drivers Who Don't Speak Marathi

The Maharashtra government is set to take action against taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who have not learned the Marathi language, as the 100-day deadline given by the government to learn the language has expired. The Transport Department will decide on the next course of action in a meeting. Possible actions include suspending licenses or permits, or giving drivers another chance. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has warned that legal action will be taken against drivers who do not know Marathi, and their licenses may be permanently suspended. The government has issued over 9 lakh valid permits, with most auto-rickshaw drivers already knowing Marathi. The Marathi language campaign will continue, with both Transport and Marathi Language Ministers involved.
