Richest Family in Colombia Donates $48 Million for Earthquake Reconstruction

The Gilinski family, Colombia's wealthiest, has donated $48 million (150 billion pesos) for the reconstruction of hospitals and schools in Cali, one of the cities most affected by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced the donation, which will support the recovery of educational and health infrastructure in the capital of Valle del Cauca department. The family, led by businessman Jaime Gilinski, is estimated to have a fortune of $14.7 billion by Forbes. The donation is part of the business sector's mobilization to support the reconstruction efforts, with over $64 million collected so far. The earthquake has left 289 dead, 4,187 injured, and 143 missing, with over 115,000 people affected and significant material damage, including 81,500 homes damaged and 14,700 destroyed.
