Hong Kong Suicide Rates: Increase Among Youth, Decline Among Elderly
The Hong Kong Samaritans Prevent Suicide Association reported 1019 suicide deaths in 2021, with a 30% increase in youth suicides (aged 19 or below) to 47 cases. The overall suicide rate was 13.57, the lowest since 2020. The association plans to strengthen support for adolescents and parents, improve family treatment resources, and advocate for regular school crisis screening. The suicide rate among those aged 70 or above was 21.1, the lowest in a decade, and has been decreasing for four years.
