Drug-Resistant Diarrhea Bug Spreads Through Sex in US
A drug-resistant strain of Shigella, a bacteria typically associated with contaminated food and water, is increasingly being transmitted sexually in the US. Cases of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Shigella have risen from 0% in 2011 to 8.5% in 2023. The infection is predominantly affecting adult men, with California reporting about one case per month. Experts attribute this to unawareness of sexual transmission and antibiotic use for other infections.8 sourcesSee all sources
