Large Dogs Die Younger Due to 'Jumping Genes'

A study of nearly 900 dogs across 120 breeds reveals that larger dogs age faster and have shorter lifespans due to changes in their epigenome, particularly in 'jumping genes' called LINE1s. These genes, when unregulated, cause genetic instability and age-related diseases. The findings could have implications for understanding human aging as well.

Microsoft CEO Calls for 'Emergency Brake' on Advanced AI

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has urged the tech industry to develop an 'urgent system to brake advanced AI' that humans can control. He proposed that AI models should be treated as potentially compromised and containable from the start, with authorized personnel able to pause or shut them down mid-task. Nadella suggested principles of observability, including model diversity, human-readable records, continuous testing, independent controls, and incident reporting.

NASA's Artemis II Crew Observes Meteorite Impacts on the Moon

The crew of NASA's Artemis II mission witnessed five tiny meteor flashes on the moon's surface during their lunar flyby in April 2023. The astronauts, who were watching for such events, spotted the brief, faint impacts with their naked eyes. These observations, along with photos and notes taken during the mission, have been published in a preliminary lunar science report. The data will help NASA estimate the frequency of micrometeoroid impacts and plan protection for future lunar outposts and crews.
